Acting

Film & Television

COURSE CODE: R2R 001
DURATION: 10 x 3-hour sessions

Our Film & Television Acting course will throw new light on the most glamorous facet of showbiz – TV and movies. Whether you’re a newcomer to the business, a bit-player wanting to take the next step, or an experienced actor looking to extend your skills, there will be plenty in this course for you.

Class sizes are kept to a manageable number, so that all students get maximum ‘screen time’ each week. They will have the opportunity to watch their recorded performances, and analyze their work in a supportive environment.

Students will work in a workshop environment, mentored by Tony Porter, a Melbourne-based actor with 40 years’ experience, who has conducted a range of workshops and classes for prospective stage and screen actors over the past 20 years.

Who will benefit:

  • Actors seeking to make the transition from stage to screen;
  • Actors who only ever wanted to perform on screen;
  • Actors wanting to maintain or extend their skills ‘between engagements’.

Course Outline:

  • Bringing it down for the small screen, where ‘less is more’;
  • Understanding the lingo: from XCU to WS, dolly to tilt, keylight to hitting the mark;
  • Playing scenes out-of-sequence, but still giving a complete performance;
  • Taking direction;
  • Working with the technology – cameras, lights, microphones;
  • Understanding the editing process;
  • Knowing the crew – and on-set etiquette.

Real to Reel Studios is able to provide a section of scenes, from monologues to multi-handed scenes - or you can provide your own.

Basics of Method Acting

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we walk and talk in a character. It’s a character that we’ve unconsciously and consciously developed over a lifetime. Acting is a craft - a disciplined art form that uses everything that makes an individual artist unique. When you can find the joy of using the good, the bad, the ugly, the evil, and sublime in yourself to create a scripted character, you’re on the way to expertly practicing this craft.

The more you are willing to share the events and sensations that have made you who you are, the better artist you will be. The more willing you are to tell the truth, the stronger an actor you will be. Acting demands you to celebrate the wild, the sinful, or the painful places within you. Use your imagination to expose and lift what’s already inside you into art. Passionately applying yourself to the craft of acting on a daily basis is a never-ending responsibility.

If you cannot uphold this responsibility, if your artistic will, desire, courage, or strength of character does not enable you to follow through, for sure this process is not right for you. An actor’s investigation looks into the substance of what makes us the human beings that we are. These inspiring words come from Susan Batson from the Black Nexxus studio in Manhattan.

In these workshops we cover Susan Batson’s circle exercise which help the actor enhance awareness of their instrument. We become more aware and less cerebral. We then take the awareness into Private Moment work- the practice of being intimate in public.

Course Dates: 4 nights and consecutive Saturday in February. Dates to be advised. Please contact us.
